I love this picture of my Grandmother and I. She was a special women in my life. I spent a lot of my childhood with Nana and Poppy while my mom was a single mom and worked as a Nurse late into the evening and many weekends.
(My Grandfather died in 1993 at the age of 69, of a heart attack while I was in College) I remember my grandfather made the best toast with butter and peanut butter for me every morning. He also enjoyed cards, so we played Old Maid and Crazy eights together. I enjoyed going to work with him at the Sporting Goods dept. of JCPenny's.
I travelled to Myrtle Beach every year with my Grandparents growing up. Many long hours in the car, but lasting memories. I would sunbathe and swim in the pool with Nana, and find sharks teeth at the beach with Poppy. And enjoy our favorite restaurant in the evening, Morrison's Cafeteria. :-) I am so glad that I had such a close relationship with my Grandparents and so many great memories. Our family moved South in 2007, the same year Nana was starting signs of Dementia. She continued to live at home until Dec. 2009, when she was ill and had to be hospitalized. After many tests, they found a tumor in her lung. She was diagnosed with lung cancer and an agressive one. Nana passed away in May 2010. She will be greatly missed! I am thankful for our trips back "home", and for many phone conversations. We were able to talk to her 2 weeks before she passed (she was very weak and shallow breaths) and she was able to talk to each of her Great-Grandchildren and tell them each that she loved them. This will forever be a great memory for all of us.
